Sports Illustrated CEO Ross Levinsohn Takes the Publishing World by Storm”

Ross Levinsohn, the Sports Illustrated CEO, who has held high-level positions at Yahoo and Fox Interactive Media, is the new CEO of Sports Illustrated Group.

Levinsohn, the Sports Illustrated CEO, was recently named president and CEO of Advance Publications’ Digital Lab and will now oversee SPG’s digital business, including SI.com. He replaces Terry Jernigan, who had been running the company following President Mark Fordyce’s departure in December 2013.

Levinsohn began his career as a journalist, working for publications like the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal before joining Yahoo in 1997 as its head of media sales. He went on to serve as the company’s senior VP for worldwide media.

In 2005, Levinsohn joined Fox Interactive Media as executive VP, leading its sales, marketing and product management operations. In 2008 he was promoted to unit president, which News Corp later acquired. Before leaving the company, he oversaw the sale of MySpace to Specific Media in 2011.

“Ross is an experienced and proven leader with a deep understanding of digital media and one of our industry’s most impressive track records,” said Scott Penn, a chief business officer at Advance Publications. “He will strengthen our ability to accelerate Sports Illustrated’s dominant digital presence and further diversify our content offerings across multiple platforms.”

He replaces Terry Jernigan, who had been running the company following President Mark Fordyce’s departure in December 2013. Jernigan had previously served as the publisher of Maxim and, before that, was EVP of national sales at Advance Digital.

According to SPG, Levinsohn’s responsibilities include overseeing SI’s digital business–including SI.com and other property sites–and its integration with content creation across all digital platforms for brand brands.

“The digital business is a key piece of what makes Sports Illustrated such a special brand,” said Levinsohn. “I am excited to be at the helm of this dynamic organization, and I look forward to working closely with Terry and his team as we continue to set the standard for excellence in sports journalism and innovation.”

Among other new hires, Sports Illustrated tapped former ESPN executive editor Jim Brandstatter as editor-in-chief. It also announced partnering with the Anderson Silva fight team to help create more content for SI’s digital properties.

The company acquired Saatchi online network Andrew Wiggins from Blur Sport, a division of Turner Broadcasting System Europe, for an undisclosed sum.
