Alliance Defending Freedom: Safeguarding Religious Rights

Alliance Defending Freedom was launched in 1994 initially as Alliance Defense Fund, by Christian community leaders. Although most of the people we work with are Christians, our organization has also helped Muslims, Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons and atheists.

At Alliance Defending Freedom, we believe that everyone has a right to their religion. In the course of our work, we have defended students from different religious faiths including conservative, libertarian, pro-conservationist, pro-life and many others.

ADF has also worked with groups outside the United States including Shia Muslims, Christians and Yazidis to prevent stop genocide against them.

Religious Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom strongly believes that religious freedom is a fundamental right for everyone regardless of their faith or lack of it. According to ADF, religious freedom guarantees every person’s right to exercise or explore their deepest questions and live by their religious convictions.

For several years, cases surrounding religious freedom in the United States mainly focused on protecting select minority religious beliefs. However, that has changed as the government today has moved to legislate areas that violate key tenets of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths.

Free Speech

ADF also works to ensure that Universities and colleges remain places of ideas – where students can debate on important issues and express their views freely. As such, ADF’s Centre for Academic Freedom has won more than 400 cases protecting free speech among students.

Sanctity of Huma Life

Alliance Defending Freedom also recognizes and defends the sanctity of life. That’s why we work round the clock to ensure courts and legislation protects children and women. For instance, ADF preserved the life of Jesse Iay, a Gulf War veteran for 10 days before his wife switched off the life support machine.
