Richard Liu or Liu Qiangdong is the CEO of JD.com, a Chinese company which is the world’s largest retailer. It operates online and through brick-and-mortar stores in China and internationally. A graduate of the People’s University of China with a degree in sociology in 1996, he was one of the so-called “first generation” Chinese Internet entrepreneurs.

JD.com is the biggest online retailer in China by revenue. The company has transformed a chain of electronic stores into an online marketplace as JD.com has taken over as one of the top e-commerce sites in the world.

In 1998, he founded Jingdong, one of the first online businesses in China. In 2002, Richard Liu started his own business, Jingdong, selling magneto-optical products such as CD ROMs in a Beijing storefront.

JD.com set up a drone testing area in its headquarters in Nanshan, which is working on delivering parcels through drones and self-driving vehicles. It also launched a trial project to test robot delivery services.

JD.com raised $54 billion in its initial public offering on the Nasdaq in late 2014, giving the company a market value of about $58 billion. The Beijing-based company began trading on the Nasdaq in the summer of 2014.

In August, JD.com announced its initiatives in the “Blockchain-as-a-Service” (BaaS) platform, aiming at making cryptocurrency transactions faster and easier to conduct by creating a platform that aims to make these financial transactions more convenient.

Qiangdong has demonstrated immense success in the e-commerce industry and has contributed by transforming traditional brick-and-mortar style stores into online marketplaces.

Liu was featured as an Honoree in Variety 500 entitled, “JD.com Richard Liu; Founder / Chairman / CEO”, as a result of his persistence, innovation, and hard work. During his free time, the billionaire loves to either spend time with his family or volunteering at Red Cross.

Richard is now paving ways through operating driverless delivery, drone services and Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) to reduce further costs with innovative technologies.
