Yanni Hufnagel is an entrepreneur, finance maven, and angel investor who is best known as the founder and CEO of a company called Institutional Investor. Yanni has been listed on the Forbes list of 400 richest Americans for the past 30 years, making him one of America’s most powerful financiers.

Early Life

Born in Egypt in 1944 to Armenian parents, Hufnagel left Egypt and immigrated to Canada with his family at age 10. He attended Simon Fraser University and completed his degree in naval engineering architecture before he started working for Exxon in Vancouver. It was there that he met his future wife, JoAnn, who was working as a secretary for the National Steel Company.

Yanni and JoAnn have been married for 47 years and are the parents of one son, J. Daniel Hufnagel.

Hufnagel spent his early career as an oil executive with Exxon in Vancouver before moving to New York City in 1979 with his family to start Institutional Investor magazine on Wall Street.

In 1974, Hufnagel began working as a stockbroker when he started at Merrill Lynch in New York City. While there, he managed a team that covered the oil and gas sector, one of his main investment areas, before founding IISI.

He spends most of his time between New York City and his $10 million beach home in Laguna Beach, California, where he often spends time surfing. He also owns properties in London, Paris, and Marbella.
