Fran Townsend now works as the executive vice president for corporate relations at Activision Blizzard, where she utilizes the same concepts and skills she gained while working in government and national security. “People are startled to learn that the same talents necessary to thrive in a corporate environment are equally needed in administration,” says the 59-year-old. “Ego has no place here.” It can’t possibly be about you as a person.” That may be true, but Townsend has spent her entire life distinguishing herself from her male and female colleagues.

Frances Mary Fragos was born three days after Christmas in 1961 in Mineola, New York, an upper-middle-class community in Nassau County, Long Island, about an hour and a half east of Manhattan. Dorothy Townsend, her mother, was the office manager for the construction industry. Her father, John Fragos, worked as a roofer on Long Island to support his family.

Townsend had always been a smart child, and at the age of 11, he was already interested in breaking through the walls that surrounded what are known as conventional male clubs. As a preteen, Townsend famously attracted the attention of the Catholic Church: she had been writing letters to the bishop, archbishop, and even the Vatican, asking permission to be an altar boy.
