On the 21st of October, Marwan Kheireddine addressed the McGill community at the 20th Annual McGill Engineering Conference to discuss his journey through engineering and how it applies to not just engineers but all students. A mechanical engineer specializing in aerospace design with a co-op term in propulsion systems and orbital mechanics, Kheireddine has been at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for 18 years. He recounted his journey through engineering school and explained how he used his degree to help him along the way.
His Achievements
Kheireddine attended McGill University and graduated in 1995 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was involved with the McGill Redmen football team and credited his leadership skills to that involvement. After graduation, he interned at Teledyne Brown Engineering before being hired as an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he spent 18 years. In 1999, he was selected as a member of the Young Aerospace Engineer’s Committee by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He worked on future space missions and landed his first overseas consulting gig with Airbus in France.
He is currently a propulsion engineer at JPL, where his responsibilities include designing rocket engines for planetary exploration missions.
Life at NASA
In his speech, Kheireddine explained how his engineering experience helped his success, from landing a job as an aerospace engineer to selecting graduate schools. He said that “hard work” is how you get to be good at anything and that he used the same approach when applying for his first job as an engineer. Admitting that the term “engineer” did not mean much to him, he felt that he had a good background in science and math and put together an impressive resume, including education, academic accomplishments, and research experience.
He was offered interviews with all the major aerospace companies hiring engineers. The most critical factor in selecting which company to work for was “the culture. READ: https://www.usek.edu.lb/en/board-of-trustees/mr-marwan-kheireddine
