Liu Qiangdong is among the most influential entrepreneurs in China. He is the CEO, Chairman, and founder of the online store JD.com. It is China’s largest online retailer. Liu started retailing business in 1998. Back then, he was focused on selling magneto-optical products; the company was known as Jindong. After five years of operations, it had over 12 branches in different parts of the country.

Growing up was not easy for Qiangdong. He grew up in poverty, and his parents worked in the coal industry. These difficulties motivated him to work to get anything he desired. He studied at the Renmin University of China, earning his degree in Sociology.

Richard Liu also acquired an MBA from China Europe International business. While still at college Liu was learning about computer programming. With few programmers back then, it was easy for Liu to make money out of the skills. Businesses were taking an interest in automated processes.

After making money from computer programming, Richard decided to invest it in the restaurant business and built his parents a new house. The restaurant ran well for some time until it failed due to poor management. After this, he started working in a Japanese company that aided him in learning managerial skills.

After working there for several years, he opened Jingdong. The company aimed to sell consumers original electronic goods and computer products, unlike most companies in the country in those eras. Through this, he gained customer loyalty which helped in expanding the business.

SARS products entered the market in 2003, forcing LIU to close all his 12 stores. He took this chance to strategize instead of giving up. He relaunched the business as an online retail store. JD.com. Before the company became stable, Qiangdong ran the customer care department for two years, which helped cut costs.
