Richard Liu Qiangdong is an internet entrepreneur born in 1973 in Jiangsu province of China. He is the founder of JD.com, an e-commerce company that has grown to become a member of the Fortune Global 500. Richard Liu attained a sociology degree in 1996 after attending the People’s University of China. However, he dedicated much of his time to studying computer programming while in school. He later earned an MBA from the China Europe International Business School.
Liu Qiangdong began running his business Jingdong, in 1998 as a storefront in Beijing dealing with magneto-optical products like CD-ROMs. By 2003, Richard’s business had achieved considerable success, opening 12 storefronts in Beijing and Shanghai. However, the SARS epidemic in China negatively impacted his business expansion and threatened its future growth.
During this time, the number of internet users across the globe was on the rise, and Richard realized that he could use this as an opportunity to shift his business online. Besides, he had some programming skills that he could use to develop an e-commerce platform. In 2004, Richard launched an e-retail platform and diversified his product offering to include computers, mobile phones, electronics, and other tech items. He changed the business name to360buy in 2007 before settling for JD.com in 2013 when the co-owner, Tencent, purchased a 20% share of the company for $5 million.
JD.com began trading on the Nasdaq in 2014, and it is a close competitor of Alibaba. It is the second-largest Chinese company by market capitalization in the e-ecommerce industry. JD.com’s active users had grown to 301.8 million by the first quarter of 2018. Over the years, the e-commerce company has become recognized for employing technological advancements in its operations.
