Douthit played in the house band for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009 and was a band Leader of the New School member. He has recorded and performed with various artists, including Harry Connick, Jr., Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, Hank Jones, Dianne Reeves, Branford Marsalis, and Tony Bennett.
A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Douthit began playing piano at age five and later took up bass guitar and electric bass. He attended Southern University and later studied under Ray Drummond at Indiana University. After college, he moved to New York City, where he worked with several different musicians before landing a gig with The Tonight Show in 1992.

He also lectures regularly at music festivals worldwide, including the JVC Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival. To his appearances as an educator, Douthit often serves as a clinician, visiting schools to teach students about jazz theory, technique, and improvisation. He has released several albums under his name that display his considerable music and arranger skills.
