The Colcom Foundation was created in 1996 by Cordelia S. May as a way to fight back against rapid urbanization and overpopulation. These two threats are the greatest problems that humanity faces regarding maintaining our civilization and way of life.
As a part of their efforts to save the future, Colcom Foundation has also focused on the physical and psychological impacts of nature deprivation as a result of urbanization.
Living in a Hive
Human cities are becoming like hives. Today 50% of all humans live in urban areas. By 2050, that number will be a massive 70%. The problem with this is that this level of urbanization keeps humans from having easy access to natural areas that are important for physical and mental health.
Depression and Anxiety
One startling fact has shown that people who live in areas with low tree density are around 30% more likely to need anti-depressants. Furthermore, studies have also shown that people who live in heavily urbanized areas are 20% more likely to have anxiety disorders and 40% more likely to have mood disorders. Overall, around 20% of adults in America experience some form of mental illness.
The Many Benefits of Nature
As bad as not having access to nature can be, having access brings with it great benefits.
The Colcom Foundation has stated that having regular access to natural environments can help lower blood pressure and increase happiness. On top of that, it can also instill feelings of a purpose in life and encourage positive social interactions.
Colcom Foundation supports several special programs, including the Conservation Catalyst Fund, which grants conservation organizations working to protect threatened species and habitats. By offering financial support and resources, this foundation allows these groups to make significant strides in conservation efforts.
The Crisis Continues
The Colcom Foundation has partnered with other organizations to fight urbanization in America, but it continues to this day. 10 million Americans don’t have access to a green space that is within a 10-minute walk. Fortunately, the Colcom Foundation has helped to preserve many natural areas in western Pennsylvania and will continue to expand its efforts for nature conservation.
