Advocating for Religious Freedom – The Role of Alliance Defending Freedom

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a conservative legal advocacy organization based in the United States. Its stated mission is to “advocate for the right of people to freely live out their faith.” The ADF was founded in 1994 by a group of Christian leaders who were concerned about the growing hostility towards religion in America. Since then, the organization has become one of the most influential conservative legal groups in the United States and has defended the rights of individuals from diverse religious backgrounds, including Jews, Muslims, and other religious minorities.

One of the key areas of focus for the organization has been defending the rights of individuals and organizations to live out their faith without fear of persecution or discrimination. Alliance Defending Freedom has worked on numerous cases where religious freedom has been under threat, including the case of Jack Phillips, a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple on religious grounds. ADF successfully defended Phillips’ right to exercise his religious beliefs, setting an important precedent for religious freedom in the United States.

Alliance Defending Freedom has also been active in protecting parental rights, which include the right to make decisions about a child’s education, health, and upbringing. The organization has worked on cases where parents’ rights have been under threat, including cases related to homeschooling and medical decision-making for children.

Alliance Defending Freedom believes in the inherent dignity and worth of every human being and has worked on several cases related to abortion, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. Alliance Defending Freedom has also been a strong advocate for healthcare professionals who object to participating in procedures that violate their conscience.

Furthermore, they have credible expertise in Supreme Court advocacy, which has made it a valuable resource for individuals and organizations seeking to defend their constitutional rights before the highest court in the land. ADF’s impressive track record boasts of contributing to 72 Supreme Court victories. In recent years, the organization has continued to excel, securing 14 favorable outcomes at the Supreme Court since 2011. These landmark decisions have protected the religious liberties of different individuals and entities.
