Alliance Defending Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) was founded initially as Alliance Defense Fund, in 1994 by several Christian law students to protect religious liberty, especially for organizations that have beliefs unpopular with the wider culture. ADF has a network of more than 450 attorneys in 32 countries and continues to grow, with new offices opening every year.

Alliance Defending Freedom exists to oppose the marginalization of Christians worldwide so they can speak freely of their faith, celebrate important religious holidays, and accept their full identity as children of God.

Alliance Defending Freedom was founded after several years of legal battles between the ACLU and Christian students in Colorado and Oregon. The ACLU dismissed the students’ group on the principles that it was unconstitutional to promote religion at a public school, denied them equal access to facilities like school buses with advertisements for Bible clubs, and forced them to stand up during graduation ceremonies if they wished to utter a Biblical prayer. The ACLU’s tactics successfully stopped this Christian activity at several public schools throughout Colorado and Oregon.

Because the ACLU dismissed Alliance Defending Freedom, the students of these two states found that they had no recourse to help them defend their right to fellowship, pray and speak about Christianity in front of their teachers and classmates. With only one victory under its belt and little legal guidance available, the students at Colorado State University faced a final battle against their school district. The district’s attorney took action against these students by filing three lawsuits based on alleged violations of the U.S. Constitution, but he was seeking to intimidate and silence Christians from speaking out about their faith in America’s public schools.

The first lawsuit sought to block the Christian student clubs from using school facilities for meetings or other activities that “promote religion. ” The second lawsuit sought a restraining order to stop the distribution of literature, including the Bible, throughout the school district. The third lawsuit went so far as to demand that faculty members who worked in the district be forbidden from promoting Christianity. See this page for additional information.
