About Alliance Defending Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom is an organization that promotes and defends the right to religious liberty. As the most significant legal charity in the United States, Alliance Defending Freedom’ mission is to advocate for and defend religious freedom as fundamental freedom that comes from God, a natural right of humanity.”

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) supports religious liberty. It is one of the very few non-profit organizations in America with a federal tax exemption because it “is organized exclusively for charitable, educational or scientific purposes.” ADF was founded by Alan Sears, James Dobson, D. James Kennedy, Larry Burkett, Bill Bright, and other evangelical leaders on 25 March 1993. It is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, United States.

The group has been described as “one of the most prominent voices in the fight for religious liberty and has attracted more controversy than any other organization in America. The opposition range from progressive religious and secular groups to liberal and conservative Christian denominations to atheist activists. Alliance Defending Freedom is not a legal group or firm, but a partnership of nearly 300 allied attorneys general across the country.”

Since 1993, Alliance Defending Freedom has engaged in numerous high-profile cases defending religious liberty and marriage. President Kristen Waggoner states, “In the last ten years, ADF has defended the religious liberty of all faiths and non-believers. Our attorneys have mediated and litigated cases in federal and state courts in all 50 states, with many of our cases now before the U.S. Supreme Court. We have supported the freedom of speech and the right to receive government services without being forced to compromise one’s faith. We have trained more than 20,000 individuals on religious liberty issues through our meetings, conventions, seminars, and online training. We have reached millions through our websites, newsletters, and other publications.”

ADF is not a litigation-only law firm. ADF also offer extensive educational resources regarding God’s design for mankind, the family and marriage. In fact, ADF have published:

  • The Family Manifesto, which summarizes the biblical view of marriage and the family.
  • “Not by Sight Alone,” which explores how our Christian faith is rooted in a worldview that affirms truth over falsehood—and why those who share that worldview can be more Christ-like than the broader population. Click here to read more about these resources and their authorship.

As the world’s largest legal organization, ADF has litigated and defended cases in the United States Supreme Court. Alliance Defending Freedom successfully argued for the U.S. Supreme Court to protect a child’s right to a religious upbringing and marriage sanctity from state courts, effectively ending same-sex marriage in Colorado, California, and Pennsylvania.
