Creativity and Computation: Justin Nelson’s Case for Neurodiverse Hires
Financial analysis rewards two things above almost everything else: sharp computation and creative problem solving. Justin Nelson argues that neurodiverse candidates often bring both in abundance, and that JP Morgan and its peers are missing out by screening them out early.
Nelson holds the title of Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at JP Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, where he leads a team responsible for more than $15 billion in client assets. His interest in neurodiverse hiring blends professional judgment with a personal understanding of the obstacles these candidates face.
Talents That Surface After the Interview
“Usually what that means is that while they may have a harder time connecting and communicating, they’re exceptional in other areas. They can be extremely creative and have amazing computational skills which far exceed the norm,” Justin Nelson JP Morgan says of neurodiverse candidates on the autism spectrum. He contrasts those strengths with what typically holds candidates back in a first meeting. “For neurodiverse candidates, the biggest challenge is typically communication, their ability to interact with people,” he explains. “Things that you and I probably take for granted, that makes it so easy for us to be having this conversation right here, it’s very hard for them.”
Nelson believes those computational and creative strengths line up well with the daily demands of wealth management, where pattern recognition and precision matter as much as any soft skill. He is direct about what needs to change on the employer side. “Employers really need to change how they think about engaging with these people,” he states.
Building the Right Conditions
Once hired, Nelson says success depends on structure. “You have to assign tasks and ensure that they understand how this fits into a larger plan or set of rules,” he advises. Nelson also supports Adelphi University’s Bridges Program and the nonprofit Broad Futures, organizations built to guide neurodiverse candidates from school into steady careers, extending his interest in the subject well beyond his JP Morgan office.
