How Harvard Business School Redirected Michael Polk’s Path

Michael Polk did not set out to become a chief executive. His original ambition, formed during an engineering degree at Cornell University, pointed toward technical work in manufacturing. It was a return to school years later that changed the trajectory of his career entirely.

After three years in Procter & Gamble‘s paper products division, split between a Pennsylvania mill and a research post in Cincinnati, Polk recognized that a purely technical path might narrow his long-term options inside a company that size. He applied to Harvard Business School and was accepted, a choice that opened doors his engineering credentials alone could not.

A Pivot Toward Marketing and General Management

The MBA gave Polk the foundation to move away from operations and into commercial roles, and he used it almost immediately. Kraft Foods hired him following business school, and he built his early reputation there in brand management and sales before advancing into general management. Michael Polk eventually led the Post Cereals division in North America and oversaw Kraft’s Asia Pacific business, experience that broadened his view of how consumer goods companies operate across different markets and cultures.

When Nabisco was acquired by Kraft, Polk was tapped to run the integration of the two companies, a job that tested the general management skills his Harvard degree had helped him build. That track record did not go unnoticed. In 2003, Unilever recruited him away from Kraft to lead its United States foods business, the first step in what would become a decade-long run through some of the largest roles in the consumer goods industry.

The choice to leave a technical career behind for business school might have looked uncertain at the time, but for Michael Polk Newell Brands, it became the turning point that set up everything that followed, from his years running divisions on two continents to the chief executive role that would define his later career.
